19 Apr, 2012

Former Corporate Director of Governance at Birmingham City Council Mirza Ahmad could stand as an independent candidate for Birmingham mayor in November if voters decide to create a directly-elected mayor in a referendum on 3 May.

Mirza left his post with the city council in August 2011 following the restructure of senior management. During the same month as his departure he founded a consultancy firm, MA (Law & Governance) and became its managing director. In November 2011 he joined St Philips Chambers in Birmingham.

Mirza was called to the Bar in 1984. In 2009, he became one of The Lawyer magazine’s Hot 100 and was awarded the Public Service Lawyer of the Year Award 2009 by the Society of Asian Lawyers. He was President of the Association of Council Secretaries and Solicitors (ACSeS) between 2009 and 2010 and has been Chairman of the Bar Association for Local Government and Public Service since 1997.
